What Are Commercial Scales?
Commercial scales are essential equipment for retail trade, complying with Accuracy Class III according to GOST 53228-2008. They are used for weighing goods before sale and must have three displays: for the seller and the customer. The screen displays the weight of the product, the price per kilogram, and the total amount. This requirement is stipulated by the Trade Law.
If scales have only one display, these models are called packing scales and are used for pre-weighing products or control measurements.
Main Characteristics of Commercial Scales
Maximum Weighing Limit (MWL)
MWL is the maximum weight that scales can measure. It is important to choose a device considering the heaviest goods in the store. For example, for weighing cheese or candy, an MWL of 5-10 kg is sufficient, while for selling bags of potatoes, up to 35 kg is required. Commercial scales with an MWL of 15 kg have a division value of 2 grams, with an MWL of 32 kg — 5 grams, and with an MWL of 60 kg — 10 grams.
Measurement Discreteness
Discreteness shows how accurate the measurements will be. The smaller this value, the more precise the weighing. For scales with high discreteness, it is essential to select reliable load cells to minimize errors.
Minimum Weighing Limit
This parameter determines the smallest weight the device can recognize. If the product is too light (such as spices or tea), the scales may not correctly detect it.
Additional Functions for Convenience
Modern commercial scales come with several useful features that make the work process faster and more efficient.
- Zeroing: allows resetting the readings after each weighing.
- "Hot" keys: store prices for popular products, speeding up the weighing process.
- Summation: helps account for the cost of multiple products in one receipt.
- Change Calculation: automatically determines the change for the customer.
- Taring: excludes the weight of the packaging from the final weight.
- Counting Mode: used for counting the number of identical items.
- Comparator Mode: signals when a set weight is reached.
How to Choose Scales Based on Operating Conditions
Platform Size
For retail stores, the standard platform size is 30-40 cm in length and 20-30 cm in width. Depending on the workspace size, you can choose compact models or devices with an enlarged platform for wholesale trade.
Materials
The best choice is stainless steel, resistant to wear and corrosion. A platform with sidewalls is convenient for working with bulk products.
Dust and Moisture Protection
For indoor stores, IP54 protection is sufficient, while for outdoor markets, models with IP68 are preferable.
